How did this little "blue bird" make so many people broadcast their daily minutiaes?

In case you didn't know, twitter is a free social-networking platform that enables users to "micro-blog" through the convenience of SMSes. Such phenomenal IT services like facebook, mobile surfing, instant messaging has hit many of us. Recently, i saw an increased number of commuters furiously tapping away on their iphone; MSNing, facebook, and surfing the net etc.
I find it particular absurd to see people tweet their minute-by-minute activities in such detail. An example written below:
A conversation between a child and mother
Mother: Son, where are you going later?
Son: Out wif frens.
Mother: Where, my dear?
Son: Watch moovie..
Mother: What time are you gonna be home tonight?
Son: Mom, stop asking so many questions!!
A few minutes later, son tweets his "movements" into his twitter account
6:02PM @sam: my mom is so getting on my nerves!!
6:15PM @sam: i am leaving my house for Clark Quay, see you there!
7:30PM @sam: my friends are late, AGAIN. . .
8:00PM @sam: sianz. all the movie tix have sold out. nothing to do now. aimlessly walking with ah boon, ah seng, ah hiao.
9:00PM @sam: ah hiao got an idea! He brought us to clubbing! Woohoo~
1:25AM @sam: had a great nite!! so shack la. going home now by taxi.
Okay. Now you know what i'm trying to depict.
It's rather ironic that mom didn't get the full answer, instead twitter did!
Do these people really have to announce to the whole world? Or do they believe their every utterance is fascinating and ought to be shared?
Pointless babble makes up 1/3 of the pie. I am not against twitter. I just find it intriguing that people succumb to technology and divulge every single thing about their daily activities while their closest ones can only be bystanders, discreetly watching the tweets unfold. What if our parents are IT
I am curious about the real purpose when these people tweet. Is it really a form of social networking to keep in touch with busy friends? Or it's just another part and parcel of technological revolution where it appeals to the masses?
"It's so cold in the library~ Brrr.."
"PSLE Maths was so difficult.. sobsob"
"I've bought a new HP mini netbook @ $299 only!"
Whatever it is, twitter has it's notable usage for many people across the globe. Unless you have a fair share of friends watching your tweets, otherwise, your tweets will be nothing more than a "shout into the empty air".
The author is apprehensive about twitter, but not facebook. =D
